A friend's air
conditioner was making loud noises before it stopped working. Then his
son-in-law hosed it down, cleaned out the coils, and voila, it started working
again. But the loud noises persist.
It looks like most units are Goodman Split units, called this for the fact that the cooling unit and the circulating unit are split. The cooling unit is situated outside your house whereas the evaporator coil which sits inside your furnace, which is located somewhere inside your home--the basement if you have one, or in the attic, or in a large closeted area in a hallway. Maybe this is a better way to describe it:

Maybe this is a better way to describe it:
A split air conditioner consists of an outdoor unit and an indoor unit. The outdoor unit is installed on or near the exterior wall of the room that you wish to cool. This unit houses the compressor, condenser coil, and the expansion coil or capillary tubing. The sleek-looking indoor unit contains the cooling coil, a long blower, and an air filter.
The economist always asks, "Compared to what?" In other words, why is a split unit system good or better . . . better than what? Better than traditional A/C units. What are traditional A/C units? That's for another post another day.
Installation of a split air conditioner is much simpler because it does not require ductwork. Rather, the indoor and outdoor units are connected with a set of electrical wires and tubing. This is good for your wallet and the environment. The ductwork required for many traditional A/C units generally increases , as many centralized A/C units lose a lot of energy due to heat exchange in the air duct system. Without a network of ducts, there is very little opportunity for heat or energy loss in a split air conditioner system. This guy says that you should pay attention to 11 items of the cooling unit. "Cooling unit" seems like a better way to describe air conditioning machinery than air conditioner since it involves the coordination of the condenser [outside the house] and the furnace stationed somewhere inside your home.
