North Phoenix.  Not far north enough.  One interesting feature of Tuscon is that it has the University of Arizona nearby.

So, to me, Tuscon looks like the most likable neighborhood.  I've been to Phoenix--too big, too commercial, and the city life doesn't really seem all that elegant, like Los Angeles or even Pasadena for that matter.  Flagstaff is essentially a college town.  Sedona is a tourist town, or at least it was when I was there back in 1995.  

The other towns or neighborhoods to consider are Mohave County, Prescott, Show Low (?), Sierra Vista, Tuscon, and Yuma.  Yuma is in the southwest corner of Arizona, deep in the heart of the Sonoran Desert.  See the map on this page.

Yuma, Arizona homes for sale are cheaper than Gilbert, Az. The crime ranking is #50.  Not too good.
Gilbert, Arizona homes for sale are more expensive than Yuma.  The crime rating is only #8, which is very good.
Florence, Arizona homes for sale are not bad with a crime ranking of #2.  Not bad at all.  Where is Florence, Az.?  Florence is 62 miles southeast of Phoenix, takes about an hour.
